CARE Fair teaches students to provide better patient care

The 2013 CARE Fair was held on October 18, 2013 at several Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) campuses across the state of Texas. The “CARE Fair” highlighted ways in which TAMHSC is teaching students to Critically Appraise Relevant Evidence (CARE)—a concept aimed at preparing graduates to provide exceptional patient care in an ever-changing health care environment.

This new style of learning prepares students for the real world of health care delivery by teaching them to reflect on what they have learned, assess new research trends and determine a method of treatment for their patient.  This style of training represents an approach to health care education that challenges current tradition about the delivery of health education.

Dr. Brett Giroir, M.D., Interim Executive Vice President and CEO of TAMHSC provided opening comments at the CARE Fair and Dr. Danielle Ofri, M.D., physician and Editor-in-Chief of the Bellevue Literary Review, was the keynote speaker.

A poster competition at the CARE Fair gave participants the opportunity to present how current research, new teaching and learning activities, and other projects were able to achieve the CARE goals. Winners included:
